ITF Taekwondo: common questions

What is ITF Taekwon-Do?
ITF Taekwon-Do is the style of Taekwondo founded by General Choi Hong Hi and taught under the International Taekwon-Do Federation. It's known for its patterns (tul), powerful hand and foot techniques, step and free sparring, and board breaking. Students progress through coloured belts to black belt by grading.
What's the difference between ITF and WT Taekwondo?
WT (World Taekwondo) is the Olympic style, full-contact with electronic scoring and a strong focus on kicks. ITF Taekwon-Do puts more weight on patterns and hand techniques, and its sparring uses light, continuous contact with punches to the head allowed. Both build flexibility, fitness and discipline.
What age can my child start Taekwondo?
Children can start from age 4. Young beginners learn stances, basic kicks and simple patterns through structured drills that build coordination, focus and confidence. Classes also include teenagers and adults, and the coach groups drills by age and size.
How do belt gradings work?
You move up the coloured belts by grading: showing the patterns, techniques and sparring for your level. The coach tells you when you're ready, so every student progresses at their own pace.
How do Taekwondo packages work?
Taekwondo packages follow calendar months. Your package starts in the month of your first class, and each month's classes are for that month. Packages start at RM 95 a month, or try a walk-in class for RM 30.
What should my child wear to the first class?
Comfortable sportswear is fine for the first class, and students train barefoot. Bring water. Once your child joins, ask the coach about a Taekwondo uniform (dobok).

Prefer to start one-to-one or with friends? Personal training and semi-private sessions run at times that suit you.
