Muay Thai or Taekwondo for kids?

Both are excellent for children from age 4: they build fitness, focus and confidence. ITF Taekwon-Do suits children who like clear goals, with kicks, patterns and belt gradings. Muay Thai suits active kids who love hitting pads, with punches, kicks, knees and elbows. The best way to choose is to let your child try one class of each.

ITF Taekwon-Do in a nutshell

  • What they learn. Stances, blocks, punches and a wide range of kicks, plus patterns (tul): set sequences learned belt by belt.
  • How they progress. Through coloured belts by grading, when the coach says they're ready. Clear, visible goals keep many children motivated.
  • Best for. Children who enjoy structure, flexibility and working towards the next belt.

Muay Thai in a nutshell

  • What they learn. Punches, kicks, knees and elbows on pads, footwork and balance, through drills and games.
  • How they progress. By getting sharper and fitter week by week, with light, controlled sparring only when they're ready.
  • Best for. Energetic kids who love to move, hit pads and burn energy.

What both give your child

Fitness, coordination, discipline and confidence, with respect for coaches and training partners built into every class. Both are coached at Fightlab in English and Bahasa Malaysia, with close supervision and partners matched by age and size.

Kids who stick with it can go a long way. Our student Nur Qaseh Diyani, 14, has won national and international gold medals in ITF Taekwon-Do in four years of training with us.

How to choose

  • Ask your child. Do they light up at kicking high and learning sequences, or at hitting pads hard?
  • Try both. Book one class of each. Most children show a clear favourite within a week.
  • Think about timing. Pick the class that fits your week, so they can train regularly.
